French Intelligence Uncovers Covert Surveillance Ring in Marseille Port

· JUN 7, 2026 ·

French counterintelligence officers have dismantled a covert surveillance network operating out of the port of Marseille, according to officials briefed on the operation. The cell had been monitoring cargo manifests and shipping schedules for nearly eighteen months before its discovery.[^1]

The Directorate-General for Internal Security (DGSI) moved against the group following a tip from a partner European service. Investigators believe the network was gathering intelligence on dual-use goods transiting the Mediterranean.[^2]

"This was a sophisticated operation with clear state backing," one official said. The arrests mark the third such case in southern France this year, underscoring growing concern about port-based espionage.
