Ukrainian National Charged in Nord Stream Pipeline Sabotage

German federal prosecutors have charged a 50-year-old Ukrainian national, identified as Serhii K, with involvement in the destruction of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in 2022. These pipelines were crucial conduits for Russian gas to Europe and were rendered inoperative by the explosions.

The indictment accuses Serhii K of orchestrating the placement of explosive devices on the pipelines using a sailing yacht, Andromeda, near Denmark’s Bornholm Island. While not directly involved as a diver or explosives expert, Serhii K is alleged to have coordinated the operation, according to documents filed by the Federal Court of Justice.

Kuznietsov, an alias linked to Serhii K, was arrested in Italy in August 2025 and extradited to Germany. He reportedly used forged documents to charter the yacht from Rostock, Germany. While the accused denies participation, claiming he was serving in the Ukrainian military at the time, he faces charges that pose significant implications for regional energy security.
