US Defense Secretary Reveals Iran Conflict Costs $37.5bn

In recent testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee, United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth disclosed that the financial toll of the ongoing conflict with Iran, conducted in conjunction with Israel, currently stands at $37.5 billion. This declaration comes amidst negotiations for a substantial defense budget that encompasses $1.5 trillion, of which nearly $70 billion is allocated for the Iran conflict.

Despite the official figure presented by Hegseth, this valuation remains conservative when compared to estimates from Moody’s Analytics, which project the domestic financial burden potentially reaching $150 billion due to ancillary impacts such as elevated energy prices. The figure represents an increase of approximately $8 billion since May, as reported by the administration of President Donald Trump.

Tensions have escalated following the breakdown of a Memorandum of Understanding that had briefly halted hostilities. The U.S. has made significant military maneuvers, with President Trump issuing threats against Iranian infrastructure in retaliation for the loss of American personnel. Meanwhile, Iran has maintained its retaliatory posture, engaging in strikes across the region, and leveraging its strategic hold over the Strait of Hormuz.
