Canadian Petition Challenges US Ambassador Amid Diplomatic Strain

A petition to expel the United States ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, has gathered over 170,000 signatures, significantly surpassing the threshold required for consideration by Canada’s House of Commons. This movement reflects a growing dissatisfaction within Canada towards the Trump administration's perceived diplomacy failures.

Hoekstra is accused of undermining Canada-US relations through various public statements. Notably, he supported former President Trump's provocative suggestion of integrating Canada as a '51st state' and alleged Canadian interference in US elections, following Canadian-funded criticism of Trump’s tariff policies.

The petition urges the Canadian government to declare Hoekstra persona non grata, demand compliance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and review alleged US diplomatic interference. The initiative began under the leadership of Green Party’s Elizabeth May, amplifying the diplomatic tensions between the neighboring countries.
