Syria Restructures Security Leadership

Syria, under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has instituted a major reshuffle in its security and intelligence leadership. The changes, announced on Sunday, are viewed as part of a strategy to centralize control and bolster national security. Interior Minister Anas Khattab has been appointed to lead the National Security Bureau while retaining his current position. This move brings various security agencies under his expanded authority.

The reshuffle also designated Hussein al-Salamah as deputy head of the National Security Bureau, with Mulham al-Shantout becoming assistant interior minister for security affairs, and Abdul Qader Tahan leading the General Intelligence Service. The General Intelligence Service, crucial for domestic and foreign threat assessments, now reports directly to Khattab, highlighting a concentrated oversight approach.

These developments are part of al-Sharaa's broader efforts to solidify central governance following the Assad family's exit from power in 2024. The recent changes are intended to mitigate security threats and facilitate Syrian reconstruction. Recent attacks in Damascus underscore the pressing need to strengthen the security apparatus. Al-Sharaa’s administration, formed in response to former President Bashar al-Assad’s departure, aims to ensure stability and unify Syria’s fragmented security structure under centralized command.
