Exacerbating Crisis: Floods in Sri Lanka's Highlands

Sri Lanka has taken decisive action by closing schools across its central highlands following lethal floods and mudslides. The region, recovering from last year's Cyclone Ditwah, faces a fresh environmental onslaught that has claimed seven lives and injured several others. The torrential rains struck the tea-growing heartland, already vulnerable during the monsoon season.

With memories of Cyclone Ditwah's wrath, which resulted in 640 fatalities and substantial economic damage, still fresh, the current calamity tests the nation's disaster management capabilities. Pradeep Kodippili, from the Disaster Management Centre, reported that mudslides buried homes, contributing to five of the seven deaths. Meanwhile, 129 dwellings suffered damage, and nearly 3,500 people required evacuation.

Military units have been mobilized to rescue residents stranded in submerged areas, emphasizing the difficulty of navigating the flood-stricken terrain. The affected region, sitting on perilous slopes, is notoriously susceptible to landslides during periods of intense rainfall. The recurrence of severe weather events over a short span poses significant challenges for authorities, complicating recovery efforts and decision-making on school reopenings.
