Texas Detention Center Protestors Receive Prison Sentences

In a noteworthy development, seven individuals were sentenced by a federal court in Fort Worth in connection with a violent protest outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. The demonstration, which took place last July, led to a police officer being shot and sparked considerable controversy over the legal framing of protest activities in the United States.

The court issued prison terms for six defendants, who admitted to providing material support to terrorism, with sentences ranging from almost two to 15 years. A seventh individual, Ines Soto, received a 50-year sentence on multiple charges including providing material support to terrorists, rioting, and conspiracy to carry an explosive device.

The protest was in opposition to former President Donald Trump’s deportation policies and was characterized by some participants’ use of fireworks and alleged vandalism. According to prosecutors, the incident also involved former US Marine reservist Benjamin Song, who shot and injured a responding police officer while urging demonstrators to arm themselves.
