US Envoys in Doha for Mediation Talks Amid US-Iran Tensions
US special envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside presidential adviser Jared Kushner, have arrived in Doha to engage with mediators concerning ongoing US-Iran negotiations, according to Qatar’s foreign ministry. Notably absent from these discussions will be direct talks with Iranian officials, as confirmed by Majed al-Ansari, a spokesman for the Qatari foreign ministry.
The current visit comes amidst a tense backdrop marked by recent US-Iranian exchanges of strikes following a four-day dispute over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Both nations have agreed to cease further attacks and engage in diplomatic dialogues facilitated by Gulf mediators. This agreement, supported by a recently brokered memorandum of understanding by Pakistan and Qatar, emphasizes halting military operations and reopening crucial trade channels.
Despite preliminary agreements to maintain a truce and work toward a comprehensive long-term settlement covering Iran's nuclear agenda, US sanctions, and broader regional stability, recent skirmishes have tested commitments. In Doha, the US delegation aims to further discussions amid these complexities, reinforcing diplomatic channels while indirect talks with Iranian counterparts remain on hold.
