Sudan Conflict Threatens Meroe Pyramids Preservation

The ongoing conflict in Sudan poses a significant threat to the ancient pyramids of Meroe, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hostilities and deteriorating security conditions have halted vital preservation efforts, exposing these fragile structures to environmental damage. Experts alert that the neglect could lead to severe deterioration, possibly resulting in structural collapses.

Situated approximately 200 kilometers north of Khartoum, the site comprises over 200 pyramids, which served as tombs for the rulers of the Kingdom of Kush between 800 BC and 350 AD. Environmental factors, such as windblown sand and invasive vegetation, are accelerating the degradation. According to local guards, the thickening sand and encroaching grass are further endangering these historic relics.

The archaeologists, including Mahmoud Suleiman, emphasize that climate change, coupled with the disruption of Sudan's archaeological functions and the suspension of international oversight, have exacerbated the vulnerabilities. UNESCO reports highlight widespread damage to cultural heritage in Sudan, noting that over 100 cultural sites and at least 22 museums have suffered destruction or looting since the conflict erupted in April 2023.
