Democrats Restructure 2028 Primary Calendar

The Democratic National Committee has enacted a significant restructuring of the 2028 presidential primary calendar. During a recent meeting in Austin, Texas, DNC members voted decisively to rearrange the sequence in which states will influence the selection of the party’s presidential nominee, aiming to regain the White House.

This reorganization returns South Carolina to the forefront of the party's nominating contests, scheduling its primary for January 22, 2028. Nevada will follow on February 1, and New Hampshire on February 8, with New Mexico, Michigan, and Virginia completing the early primary circuit in February. The remodel aims to better reflect the demographics and diversity of the Democratic electorate.

The revised order prioritizes states with substantial racial diversity, aligning the primaries more closely with the party's electoral base. However, the change has not been free from dispute, notably facing resistance from New Hampshire and Iowa, states traditionally leading the primaries. By elevating South Carolina, the DNC acknowledges its significant Black voter population, while Nevada and New Mexico spotlight their Latino and Hispanic communities, comprising 31% and 49% of these states' populations, respectively.
