Venezuela Releases 131 Political Prisoners Amid Post-Maduro Transition

In a notable development within Venezuela, the interim government has announced the release of 131 individuals deemed as political prisoners. This move is portrayed as a step towards national reconciliation following the U.S.-orchestrated removal of former President Nicolas Maduro earlier this year. Those freed were granted alternative measures to incarceration under the Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence, as per government sources.

The release has been independently confirmed by opposition group Vente Venezuela, which verified 43 cases, as well as the Foro Penal rights group, which noted that at least 40 prisoners were set free. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised this action, highlighting its significance in the nation's reconciliation process, emphasizing that a total of 1,046 Venezuelans have been released post-Maduro's ousting.

Despite these developments, opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa has called for the unconditional release of all remaining political prisoners. Though the recent releases bring immense relief to affected families, Guanipa insists that partial measures are insufficient and demands the closure of what he describes as 'torture centres.' The process of negotiation between the government and opposition, facilitated by the U.S., continues to evolve as both sides look to work on retrieving frozen assets.
