US Intensifies Strikes on Iran Amidst Rising Gulf Tensions
The United States has escalated its military actions against Iran, targeting strategic sites near Tehran for the first time in a significant uptick of hostilities. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes aimed to weaken Iran's military capabilities, specifically focusing on facilities used to threaten maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz. An oil tanker was reportedly targeted among the assets hit.
Tensions have soared as at least 35 individuals have died and over 300 have been injured in the ongoing conflict which saw Iran retaliate by striking US military bases in neighboring Gulf states. These developments follow accusations by the US of Iran attacking commercial vessels in the strategic Strait.
CENTCOM confirmed that targets included Iranian command centers, air defense positions, and missile inclinations across several locations including the significant coastal hub of Bandar Abbas. In turn, Iranian forces claim to have engaged US assets, reflecting a broader regional destabilization with both nations implementing aggressive stances.
