US Diplomats in Qatar Engage Mediators Amid Iran Tensions
US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Presidential advisor Jared Kushner are currently in Doha for discussions with mediators concerning the ongoing US-Iran negotiations. The proceedings follow a recent exchange of strikes tied to disagreements over the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime corridor for global oil traffic. Qatar's foreign ministry confirmed that direct discussions with Iranian officials are not planned.
The meeting in Doha comes after a memorandum of understanding, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, aimed at deescalating hostilities and reopening the Strait, which had been shut due to military actions. This agreement, primarily focused on halting all military operations, sets a 60-day period to reach a comprehensive settlement involving Iran's nuclear activities, US sanctions, and a lasting ceasefire.
Despite initial progress at talks held in Switzerland, a resurgence in hostilities jeopardized diplomatic gains. The US and Iranian delegations have agreed to a temporary cessation of attacks, while technical talks are intended to further advance the terms of the MoU. However, official statements reveal discrepancies in planned technical discussions, highlighting the fragility of the diplomatic negotiations.
