Maltese Businessman Faces Justice in Journalist Murder Trial
Yorgen Fenech, a prominent Maltese businessman, is on trial for his alleged role in the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Arrested in 2019 as he attempted to flee via yacht, Fenech stands accused of orchestrating the 2017 car bombing that claimed Caruana Galizia's life. The journalist was actively probing corruption tied to the offshore company '17 Black,' which Fenech reportedly owned.
Prosecutors allege that Fenech contracted Melvin Theuma, a former taxi driver, to facilitate the murder. Theuma confessed to arranging the assassination, enlisting three individuals responsible for executing the fatal bombing. These men confessed and received varied sentences; those who manufactured the device were sentenced to life imprisonment.
The trial is unfolding in a climate of heightened scrutiny, driven by previous government handling of the case, which prompted the resignation of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat amid widespread protests. A 2021 inquiry found the Maltese state culpable for fostering an 'atmosphere of impunity' contributing to the murder. This trial marks a critical juncture in addressing EU-level protection of journalistic integrity.
