Uganda Honors Memory of Yonatan Netanyahu in Entebbe Tribute

Uganda has erected a statue commemorating Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of the Israeli Prime Minister, acknowledging his sacrifices during the iconic Entebbe hostage rescue operation of 1976. This military mission, notable in both Israeli and Ugandan historical narratives, successfully freed over 100 hostages from an Air France flight hijacked by terrorist operatives.

The audacious rescue plan, executed by Israel's elite commandos, saw Yonatan Netanyahu as its only Israeli casualty. The operation, which unfolded at Entebbe's old airport terminal, has been marked not just as a daring rescue but as a significant breach of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's authority. The monument captures Netanyahu in action, reflecting his bold leadership during the perilous mission.

Uganda's military head, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, emphasized the mission's historical importance, acknowledging the resultant Ugandan losses amidst the broader context of Amin's tyrannical regime. Despite past animosities, the unveiling stands as a symbol of the evolved diplomatic relations, characterized by renewed partnership and strategic cooperation between Uganda and Israel.
