30 Malian Soldiers Killed in Anefis Retaking from Rebels
The Malian military has confirmed that approximately 30 soldiers have been killed and dozens more injured in the operation to retake the strategic northern town of Anefis. This decisive military engagement aimed to wrest control of the town from Tuareg separatists and an armed faction affiliated with al-Qaeda, who had previously seized it in a wave of coordinated attacks on July 4.
The recapture effort, which marked nearly a week of intense combat, came to fruition with security forces announcing control over Anefis, situated some 100km from Kidal, a key rebel-held city. The army chief expressed profound regret over the fatalities, noting that around 60 soldiers sustained injuries, some critically.
Mali, under military governance, continues to navigate a protracted multi-dimensional crisis, plagued by insurgencies and deep-seated political instability. The al-Qaeda-aligned Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin alongside the Azawad Liberation Front, with occasional tactical alliances, persists in its insurgency against the state's strengthened security operations bolstered by foreign allies.
