US-Iran Tensions: Indirect Talks in Doha Amid Strait Disputes
US envoys, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, have arrived in Doha to engage with Qatari mediators concerning the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. Notably, no direct meetings with Iranian officials are planned during this engagement, contradicting claims by US President Donald Trump of an Iranian request for dialogue.
The Iranian technical delegation, present in Doha, is dedicated to addressing the memorandum of understanding (MOU) which encompasses several significant issues such as disputes over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets. Contentious elements remain, including Article 1 related to a ceasefire in southern Lebanon which Iran argues is inadequately addressed by US actions.
The strait remains a focal point of contention, particularly Article 5 of the existing MOU. Iran's authority to regulate maritime traffic within a 60-day negotiation period is contested by the US, which favors unimpeded flow. Additionally, Iran has voiced objections to new sea routes proposed near Omani waters, purportedly established without sufficient Iranian coordination, raising further concerns of MOU violation.
