Sudan Sentences RSF Chief Hemedti to Death Amidst Civil War
Amidst the ongoing civil conflict in Sudan, a court in the army-controlled city of Port Sudan has sentenced Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, to death for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide related to operations in West Darfur. Alongside Hemedti, 15 senior figures of the RSF also received death sentences. These legal actions occur within the broader context of sustained conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese military since 2023.
The RSF is a paramilitary organization entangled in the violent struggle against the Sudanese army, predominantly impacting the capital, Khartoum, and extending into regions like Darfur. Tensions were primarily fueled by disputes over the RSF's integration into the national military, complicating Sudan's path back to civilian governance. In Darfur, the RSF has been accused of severe human rights abuses, including ethnically targeted attacks against non-Arab communities, specifically the Massalit group.
The ruling against Hemedti occurs as the Sudan Founding Alliance, which includes the RSF, opposes the court's decision. Hemedti himself was tried in absentia, and his location is yet unknown. This verdict emerges amid a dire humanitarian scenario, with millions displaced across the country due to the ongoing unrest. The situation remains unstable, as governmental forces aim to consolidate control over strategic areas previously held by the RSF.
