Somali Forces Repel Rebel Assault on Strategic Baidoa

Somalia's national army successfully repelled an aggressive assault by opposition forces in the strategic city of Baidoa. Heavy fighting erupted near dawn, as militants loyal to former South West State president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen initiated an attack on government-held positions, sparking a significant confrontation.

The Defence Ministry reported federal forces killed 30 enemy combatants, countering claims by Laftagareen's faction of having seized the city center. The ministry also alleged that al-Shabab, the al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group, fought alongside the rebel troops, further complicating the volatile security landscape.

Baidoa, located 245 kilometers northwest of Mogadishu, remains a focal point amidst Somalia's ongoing political crisis following contentious constitutional amendments. These changes, instituted by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, triggered widespread unrest, disrupting the country's delicate power-sharing framework and inciting violence.

The turmoil exacerbates Somalia's dire humanitarian conditions, placing millions at risk of famine as the instability persists. Repeated clashes, including past attempts by Laftagareen loyalists to reclaim control, underscore the precariousness of the region's security environment.
