Saudi Arabia Appoints Leader for Maritime Defence Coalition

Saudi Arabia has announced the appointment of Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri as the commander of a newly formed multinational maritime defence coalition. This initiative aims to secure vital shipping lanes through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. The coalition was established to safeguard freedom of navigation and ensure the protection of key international trading routes.

The coalition, declared on July 30, includes Bahrain, Bangladesh, the Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Turkiye, and Yemen. These nations have committed to a joint defence strategy, coordinating naval operations and fostering international cooperation. The coalition remains open to new members aligning with its objectives, with several countries in the process of joining.

The coalition plans to hold a strategic meeting from August 12 to 13 to finalize its operational framework and facilitate further expansion of membership. The establishment of this coalition is particularly significant amidst heightened tensions in the region, with global trade and energy supplies heavily reliant on these key maritime corridors.
