Renewed Tigray Conflict Forces Refugees Into Sudan

Following a recent escalation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, hundreds of refugees, including wounded fighters, have crossed into Sudan. This surge of displacement stems from renewed hostilities between the Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) rebels. The weekend's fighting, marked by heavy artillery and drone use near Shererina, breached the peace agreement established in November 2022.

The renewed violence raised fears of descending back into civil war less than four years after a previous conflict resulted in over 600,000 casualties. Tensions have been mounting at the border, with both Ethiopian and Tigray forces accusing each other of initiating hostilities. The fragile truce now hangs in the balance as both sides test the limits of their agreement.

Reports from the Sudan border indicate explosions and gunfire impacting refugee camps, igniting further concern from international agencies, including the UNHCR. While the immediate conflict has somewhat de-escalated, according to TPLF representatives, the potential for further conflict remains high as distrust between the conflicting parties persists.
