Mexico Pursues Legal Action Over Deaths in US Immigration Custody

Mexico has initiated legal proceedings in the United States concerning the deaths of its citizens while held in immigration detention or during enforcement operations. This move is seen as a decisive response from the Mexican government to the heightened immigration measures under US President Donald Trump's administration. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed that complaints are being lodged with state prosecutors following reports that 17 Mexican nationals have died under these circumstances.

In a coordinated effort, Mexico is dispatching cease-and-desist letters to US detention centers implicated in these incidents. The Adelanto facility in California, where four Mexican citizens have died, has been notably highlighted. These letters demand an immediate halt to practices allegedly contributing to this mortality rate, with specific reference to deficient medical care and substandard detention policies. Concurrently, the Mexican embassy plans to engage the US Department of Justice, supported by its consular network.

The initiative, bolstered by statements from Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Alvarez, also includes an appeal to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to assess whether these deaths breach international commitments by the US. President Claudia Sheinbaum underscored the urgency for Mexico to vocalize its concerns, especially following a recent shooting incident involving a Mexican national by an ICE agent in Texas. Despite avoiding direct confrontation, Mexico emphasizes the necessity for solidarity and voices against human rights violations.
