UN Warns of Funding Threats to Afghan Women's Aid Under Taliban Rule

Half a decade after the Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan, the United Nations has raised alarms over critical funding shortages jeopardizing women's aid organizations. Over 50% of these groups face potential shutdowns within a year as financial support wanes. This warning emerges amidst a broader $1.7 billion humanitarian appeal for Afghanistan that remains largely unfunded.

Susan Ferguson, the UN Women's special representative in Afghanistan, has urgently implored donor nations not to reduce funding for programs targeting Afghan women. Her appeal highlights the dire consequences of further fiscal neglect, including the exacerbation of humanitarian challenges faced by women under current Taliban-imposed restrictions. The Taliban’s return has seen the implementation of over 100 decrees curtailing women’s rights, severely impacting daily life, education, and employment.

The UN’s plea coincides with the Taliban's five-year milestone since regaining power following the US withdrawal. Despite ceremonial activities marking this anniversary, such as cricket matches, women and girls remain systematically excluded from public life. This exclusion underscores the pressing need for sustained international involvement to mitigate the oppressive realities women face.
