Protests Escalate in Jharkhand Over Exam Scandals

In the Indian state of Jharkhand, escalating protests have drawn a significant number of demonstrators in response to alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations. This unrest is centered around the Jharkhand Public Service Commission's recruitment processes, which protestors claim were marred by leaked test questions and other failings. Students have advanced their demonstrations to the state Legislative Assembly building in Ranchi, prompting a strong response from riot police utilizing water cannons and setting up barricades to deter the march.

Despite intensified security measures, including surveillance drones and multi-tiered barbed-wire barricades, student demand for an overhaul of the examination system remains resolute. They seek the cancellation of specific exams and federal-level investigation into the allegations. Among them, student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who has been on hunger strike, continues to call for action, indicating that recent government moves to cancel some exams and resignations from officials have not fully addressed their grievances.

The Jharkhand government's attempts at resolution, including the cancellation of the 14th JPSC preliminary exam and two other tests, have not quelled the protests. Student groups remain unsatisfied, pushing for further government accountability by demanding the Combined Graduate Level examination's cancellation and an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The persistence of these protests follows a similar movement in New Delhi where widespread demonstrations led to the resignation of a top education official.
