US Envoys in Doha for Gulf Mediations Amid US-Iran Tensions

US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are currently in Doha, conducting discussions with mediators regarding ongoing US-Iran negotiations, according to Qatar's foreign ministry. However, no direct meetings with Iranian officials are planned. The diplomatic efforts follow a volatile exchange of strikes after a dispute over the Strait of Hormuz led to a pause in hostilities.

These talks align with a memorandum of understanding facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, which seeks to de-escalate military actions, including those in Lebanon, and ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. With global oil shipments dependent on this vital passage, a provisional agreement was reached to suspend military operations while pursuing a more comprehensive solution, covering contentious issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme and US-imposed sanctions.

Despite initial progress in Switzerland, where senior figures from both the US and Iran attended, recent attacks underscored the fragility of the ceasefire. Iran's aggression towards a cargo vessel following territorial disputes highlights the urgency for sustained diplomacy.
