Mount Etna Eruption Grounds Sicily’s Main Air Hub

Persistent volcanic activity from Mount Etna has necessitated the suspension of operations at Sicily's primary air transit point, Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport. Authorities have declared that flights will remain halted until at least midday GMT on Saturday, as the ongoing ash emissions create unprecedented disruptions.

Over the past week, more than 600 flights have been diverted, with over a third of nearly 2,000 scheduled flights canceled. This eruption raises critical concerns about the strategic positioning of Catania's airport, given its proximity—just 30 kilometers south—to Europe's tallest and most active volcano.

The disruption extends beyond European borders, with volcanic ash dispersing as far as North Africa. Train services have bolstered connectivity attempts between Palermo, Messina, and Catania, yet passengers face the grim reality that volcanic disruptions typically elude compensation under European Union aviation regulations.
