Lebanon-Israel Talks in Rome Seek Implementation of Framework Deal

Lebanon and Israel have reconvened in Rome for crucial discussions aimed at implementing a United States-mediated framework agreement. The negotiations, conducted at the US embassy in the Italian capital, are expected to tackle the specifics of an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Despite the significance of these meetings, expectations for rapid progress are tempered.

The decision to hold discussions in Rome facilitates easier consultation with both the Lebanese and Israeli administrations. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has directed his delegation to insist on the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from specific areas before advancing further talks. This move underscores Lebanon's strategic priorities in its diplomatic engagements with Israel.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed Italy's readiness to host the talks, aiming to maintain momentum towards a genuine ceasefire in Lebanon. The backdrop of these discussions includes ongoing Israeli attacks and Hezbollah's adamant refusal of disarmament, complicating the potential for swift resolution. Despite a US-Iran brokered ceasefire agreement, Israel continues its military activities citing national security concerns.
