EU's Digital Border System Challenges Travel Industry

The European Union's newly implemented digital border verification, known as the Entry/Exit System (EES), is severely disrupting travel across the continent. The initiative, aimed at automating and streamlining border crossings, has led to extensive delays, with passengers enduring waits of up to five hours. In a forceful plea, major aviation organizations including Airports Council International Europe and Airlines for Europe, alongside the International Air Transport Association, have addressed EU leadership, particularly urging European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to intervene. The coalition highlights the operational strain facing border authorities, airports, and airlines, insisting that the situation demands immediate attention.

With an anticipated influx of 40 million additional passengers during the peak summer months, the aviation sector warns of intensified challenges if current policies persist without adaptation. The repercussions threaten the EU's standing as a premier travel destination, with the travel industry pointing to potential shifts in international tourism trends due to prolonged border delays.
