Death Toll Rises in Zimbabwe's Ferry Tragedy
The recent capsizing of a ferry on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has resulted in a climbing death toll, now at 84, as authorities recover additional bodies. The ferry was carrying an estimated 153 passengers, surpassing its capacity of 90, when it overturned due to heavy winds near the Zambian border.
The vessel, overloaded with passengers, was en route from Kariba to rural fishing communities, highlighting the travel challenges faced in northern Zimbabwe due to insufficient infrastructure. The reliance on water transport in such regions underscores critical gaps in the existing transport framework.
The tragic incident represents the deadliest ferry disaster recorded in Zimbabwe, taking the lives of at least 18 children. President Emmerson Mnangagwa labeled the event as “tragic,” urging immediate action to address the exposed deficiencies in transport safety and oversight.
