Russia Rebukes Japan Amidst Kuril Islands Tensions

Russia has issued a formal protest to Japan following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in response to President Vladimir Putin's recent visit to the Kuril Islands. The contentious visit to these disputed territories has further strained relations between the two nations, with Japan summoning the Russian ambassador in reprisal. Prime Minister Takaichi labeled Putin's visit as "grave" and "absolutely unacceptable," asserting Japan's historical and legal claims to the islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories.

The Kuril Islands dispute has long been a source of tension, hindering the signing of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan since the end of World War II. The Soviet Union's seizure of the islands in 1945 and subsequent expulsion of Japanese inhabitants have been contentious points. Current geopolitical frictions are further exacerbated by Japan’s alignment with G7 nations in imposing sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.

Amid these tensions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Japan's stance, accusing Tokyo of adopting a "militaristic line" and warning against any deepening support for Ukraine. Analysts suggest that Putin's visit serves as a strategic message to deter Japan from advancing its defense collaboration with Western allies, notably involving considerations over military support mechanisms such as the supply of Patriot missiles.
