US Court Curtails Trump's Efforts to Halt Climate Grants

A U.S. federal appeals court has obstructed the Trump administration's attempt to annul a substantial clean energy grant program. The court ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lacks authority to freeze approximately $20 billion in grants dedicated to clean energy projects, originally sanctioned under the Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act.

The program, known as the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, was designed to bolster energy efficiency and infrastructure investments through loans and financial aid from nonprofit organizations. Despite this ruling, immediate disbursement of funds has been delayed to potentially allow for a Supreme Court intervention.

The EPA, under Administrator Lee Zeldin, argued for dismantling the fund due to alleged mismanagement and misalignment with agency priorities. Zeldin criticized the program as a misuse of federal resources, however, the organizations involved have accused the administration of unlawfully withholding approved funds as a result of political opposition to climate initiatives.

Tuesday's court decision rescinds a previous judgment by a smaller panel that previously sided with the administration, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing legal battle over federal climate policy direction amid administrative disputes.
