Hamas Dissolves Governance in Gaza, Paves Way for Technocracy
In a marked political shift, Hamas has dissolved its governing committee in Gaza, aiming to replace it with a technocratic committee. After nearly two decades of exercising control, Hamas is setting the stage for a new civilian governance structure. This development follows months of signaling from Hamas about stepping back from daily governance in the Strip, notwithstanding the unresolved issue of disarmament.
The decision, announced by a senior Hamas official, indicates that a 'nationally accepted figure' will oversee the transition until the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) formally assumes its role. The dissolution and handover are expected to be managed by Palestinian official Ali Shaath, who leads NCAG. The NCAG was part of a ceasefire arrangement mediated last October, which involved the release of hostages and prisoners between Hamas and Israel.
Despite internal and external challenges, including Israeli objections to the NCAG's presence in Gaza, this move garners a positive reception from Palestinian factions. Talks in Cairo highlighted Hamas's commitment to a peaceful transition of power, enhancing hopes for regional stability and governance reform in the long-troubled Gaza Strip.
