Guyana Ferry Tragedy: Death Toll Climbs to 41 Amid Investigation

The maritime disaster off the coast of Guyana has seen the death toll rise to 41, after authorities recovered 14 additional bodies following the capsizing of the MV Barima. The vessel overturned on Saturday night, resulting in the country's worst maritime incident in decades. With 77 individuals rescued, efforts are ongoing to locate those still missing.

The ferry, which listed 133 on its manifest, was actually carrying 179 people. Guyana's Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, stated discrepancies in the manifest and potential drug use among crew members are under investigation as contributing factors. The captain and at least one crew member have been detained after testing positive for marijuana, highlighting serious breaches in operational protocol.

A fleet of 16 vessels, supported by French and local divers, has been deployed to the accident site near Port Kaituma. This incident underscores the challenges faced by Guyana as it navigates safety standards and regulatory enforcement in its maritime operations, amid a broader territorial dispute with Venezuela over the Essequibo region.
