A segment of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, adrift in space since last year, is believed to have collided with the Moon at high velocity. This unintended impact, yet to be visually confirmed, is projected to have created a new crater on the lunar surface. Experts are monitoring the event using telescopic equipment, although it's not discernible to the naked eye.

The upper stage of the Falcon 9, weighing approximately 4 metric tonnes, is suspected to have struck the Einstein Crater on the Moon's challenging-to-see western limb. The impact, occurring at an estimated speed of 5,400 mph (8,690 km/h), was anticipated to disperse a significant plume of lunar dust illuminated by sunlight. However, NASA reassures that this event poses no threat to Earth.

The rocket debris originated from a mission launched last January, which aimed to transport two lunar landers. Following its mission, the rocket's second stage remained in orbit instead of being redirected to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. This underscores the complexities surrounding space debris management as leftover fragments continue to orbit, adding to the growing challenge of space junk navigation.
