Deadly Monsoon Devastation Across India and Sri Lanka

The ongoing monsoon season has resulted in a tragic death toll exceeding 100 across India since July. These fatalities, resulting from floods and landslides, underscore the increasingly perilous impact of climate change-induced weather phenomena in South Asia. In Assam, particularly in the Sivasagar district, the impact has been devastating with at least 87 reported deaths.

The state of Kerala has also been severely affected, recording a minimum of 15 deaths and thousands displaced to relief camps. Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, intense rains have claimed 31 lives. Additionally, lightning strikes in Jharkhand have killed at least 14, highlighting the broader monsoon-related risks across the region.

The destructive pattern extends beyond India, affecting Sri Lanka, where the monsoon has led to eight deaths and displaced 12,000 individuals amid a contrasting severe drought in other parts of the country. This extreme weather is exacerbated by the El Nino climate pattern, disrupting typical weather and rainfall in the region.
