Colombia Endorses Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

Colombia's recent political shift has resulted in its becoming the second nation to formally recognize Israel's claim over the Golan Heights, aligning itself with the United States on this controversial geopolitical issue. This decision emerges shortly after the electoral victory of far-right President Abelardo de la Espriella.

The Colombian Foreign Ministry formally announced the recognition, underscoring Israel's sovereignty and the right to self-defense over this strategically crucial territory. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar commended de la Espriella for this significant diplomatic endorsement, marking a notable shift in Colombia's foreign policy direction.

Historically, the Golan Heights, seized by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981, remains internationally contentious. The United Nations asserts Syrian sovereignty over the region, a stance reiterated by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
