Child-Driven Collision Claims Lives of Eight Thai Monks

A tragic incident has unfolded in the northeastern Thai province of Mukdahan, resulting in the deaths of eight Buddhist monks and injuries to several others. An 11-year-old child reportedly took his family's pick-up truck and drove into a procession of monks on a peaceful pilgrimage. The crash occurred approximately 600 kilometers northeast of Bangkok.

The monks, along with lay followers, were walking on the roadside as part of a 260-kilometer journey towards Ubon Ratchathani province. The procession, formed about 30 minutes before the collision, was disrupted by the speeding vehicle, leading to significant casualties. Five monks tragically lost their lives at the scene, and three more succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Around 10 to 20 additional individuals sustained various degrees of injuries.

Footage from security cameras captured the harrowing moment when the pick-up truck, driven by the young boy, plowed into the line of monks. Local rescue services responded swiftly, and many injured monks were taken to Mukdahan Hospital for urgent medical care. Four victims remain in critical condition, highlighting the severe impact of the incident.
